Between 1802 and 1804, children attributed to Stephen and Keziah (nee Strawn) Jones are listed as having been born in or near Middletown, Butler County, Ohio. I will later show that two presumed daughters state in later censuses that they were born in Ohio.
In The Cincinnati Pioneer Vol. 1, pg. 23 [John Day Caldwell ed./Cincinnati Pioneer Assn; Google Books], Benjamin V. Jones (confirmed son of Stephen Jones) states he was born in Greene County, Pennsylvania on 4 Apr, 1806, and emigrated to Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio on 4 Feb 1810. (It's also possible that there was another daughter born in Pennsylvania the year before Benjamin, more on this later.) The reason for the 5-year sojourn in Greene County ca 1804-1810 is not known.
Stephen Jones is not found in the 1810 census for Greene County, Pennsylvania, so it does appear that he may have removed his family in February of that year. Is Benjamin Jones correct in his statement that he came to Cincinnati in 1810? or is he is giving a general statement, and the family actually returned to Butler County?
The 1810 census records for Ohio are lost, so Stephen's residence from 1801 to 1810 will need to be verified using tax, land or voters' records. I have not seen any of these records at this point, so a trip to the Family History Center seems in order.
I would welcome any thoughts from other researchers regarding the above.
